Wine: 2019 Terra del Varo
Producer: Tenuta Cavalier Pepe. We visited this producer numerous times throughout the years.
Region: Irpinia, Campania, Italy
Grape Varieties: Primarily Aglianico, with possible inclusion of other native varieties (exact blend may vary)
Alcohol Content: Approximately 13.5% ABV
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Deep ruby red with violet reflections, showcasing its youth and vibrancy. The wine is clear and bright, with moderate legs indicating balanced alcohol content.
Nose: Aromatically expressive with notes of ripe red cherries, blackberries, and plums. Subtle hints of violets, Mediterranean herbs, and a touch of black pepper add complexity. As it opens, nuances of licorice, leather, and a faint mineral undertone, typical of Irpinia’s volcanic soils, emerge.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with firm, yet refined tannins characteristic of Aglianico. The palate mirrors the nose with flavors of juicy black fruits, complemented by earthy notes, spice, and a touch of dark chocolate. Bright acidity provides freshness, balancing the tannic structure and enhancing the wine’s depth.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and a subtle smoky minerality.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as braised lamb, grilled sausages, aged cheeses like Pecorino, and traditional Campanian cuisine like ragù Napoletano.
Aging Potential: While approachable now with some decanting, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for the next 5-8 years, allowing its tannins to soften and more complex tertiary notes to develop. PM 89
