Tenuta Fertuna Messiio 2018 is a distinguished expression of Merlot from the Maremma Toscana region. We visited the beautiful estate in the summer 2024.
The estate, located in the Grilli area of Gavorrano, Tuscany, benefits from a unique terroir characterized by clayey soils interspersed with Galestro and Alberese rocks, and the moderating influence of the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. This environment fosters the cultivation of high-quality Merlot grapes.
Vinification and Aging: The Merlot grapes undergo partial fermentation in Allier tonneaux, followed by aging for 12 months in both new and second-passage barriques. The wine is then blended and rests in the bottle for a minimum of six months before release.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Deep garnet red hue with a viscosity of 13.5%abv
Nose: An intense bouquet featuring an array of black fruits, such as blackberry and black cherry, intertwined with subtle vanilla nuances.
Palate: The wine presents a harmonious blend of flavors, with the initial black fruit notes evolving into hints of tobacco and chocolate, accompanied by a delicate touch of caramel. It is round, full-bodied, and exhibits a persistent intensity.
Messiio 2018 exemplifies Tenuta Fertuna’s commitment to crafting exceptional wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their terroir and the Merlot grape.
