**Appearance:** The Collepiano 2011 presents a deep, garnet-red hue with subtle ruby highlights. The color hints at both the wine's maturity and potential complexity.
**Nose:** Intense and layered aromas greet the nose, starting with dark ripe fruits such as black cherry, plum, and blackcurrant. These are complemented by secondary notes of tobacco, leather, and a touch of spice—clove and cinnamon—with a hint of earthy undertones. As the wine opens up, there's a delicate presence of dried herbs and balsamic nuances, adding depth and elegance.
**Palate:** On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with refined, ripe tannins that provide a firm backbone. Flavors of dark fruit, particularly black cherry and blackberry, dominate initially, followed by notes of licorice, cocoa, and a subtle hint of vanilla from oak aging. The acidity is bright, balancing the richness of the fruit and contributing to a long, lingering finish.
**Finish:** The finish is persistent, with lingering flavors of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of minerality. A slight balsamic sweetness and tobacco leaf notes emerge on the tail end, adding complexity and intrigue.
**Pairing Suggestions:** This vintage pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as braised meats, game, and aged cheeses. It also complements dishes with truffles or mushroom-based sauces, enhancing the wine’s earthy characteristics.
**Overall Impression:** The Arnaldo Caprai Collepiano 2011 is a robust yet elegant expression of Sagrantino di Montefalco, showing the grape's capacity for aging and development. Its balance of fruit, tannin, and acidity suggests this wine will continue to evolve over the next several years.
