Carapace 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino

We visited the winery in June 2018 during the visit in Umbria. The wine is made of Sagrantino .

Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet reflections, showing the wine’s maturity and density. Its dark, intense color hints at the bold concentration of flavors to come.

Aroma: The nose is powerful and complex, offering rich aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plums, layered with earthy undertones of leather and forest floor. Additional hints of dried herbs, cocoa, and black pepper add depth, with a whisper of balsamic and tobacco reflecting the wine’s age.

Palate: Full-bodied and robust, Carapace 2013 delivers a rich tapestry of flavors that echo the nose. Ripe black fruit flavors intertwine with dark chocolate, licorice, and spicy nuances, all underscored by firm, structured tannins that define Sagrantino. The acidity is well-integrated, bringing balance to the wine’s intense profile and allowing the complex flavors to evolve gracefully on the palate.

Finish: Long, bold, and layered, with a lingering note of dark fruit and spice. The tannins provide a gripping, slightly chewy finish, making it a wine with excellent aging potential.

Overall: Carapace 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino is a powerful and expressive wine that showcases the depth and character of Sagrantino from Montefalco. Its structure and complexity make it a natural pairing for rich dishes like roasted game, aged cheeses, and hearty meat-based pasta. A true expression of the Umbrian terroir, meant to be savored now or cellared for further evolution.
