2020 Apicella Tramonti Rosso

This wine is crafted by our dear friend, producer Apicella, whose dedication to quality and tradition we deeply admire. Over the years, we have had the pleasure of visiting this winery many times, witnessing its evolution and passion firsthand. Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Tramonti, a charming mountainside town near Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, the winery is surrounded by terraced vineyards that reflect the region’s rich heritage and natural beauty.

Grape Varieties & Terroir:

The 2020 Apicella Tramonti Rosso is a masterful blend of Piedirosso (local nickname: “Per’e Palummo”), Aglianico, and Tintore di Tramonti, sourced from the sun-drenched terraces of Tramonti in the Amalfi Coast’s rugged landscape. These native Campanian varieties thrive in the area’s volcanic soils, rich in minerals, and are influenced by the Mediterranean climate, with cool breezes and significant diurnal temperature variation. This unique terroir shapes the wine with a balance of vibrancy and structure.

Appearance:

Brilliant ruby red with garnet reflections, showing its youth and vibrancy.

Nose:

The bouquet is intensely aromatic, opening with notes of wild red berries, such as cherry and raspberry, intertwined with hints of dried herbs and a touch of violet. A deeper layer reveals spicy undertones of black pepper and subtle hints of earthiness, characteristic of its volcanic origins.

Palate:

On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied and elegant, with a silky texture. Piedirosso brings bright acidity and lively red fruit flavors, while Aglianico contributes tannic structure and depth. The rare Tintore di Tramonti enhances the wine’s intensity, adding notes of black plum and a touch of smokiness. There is a delightful minerality on the mid-palate, a hallmark of Tramonti’s volcanic soils, leading to a long, persistent finish with nuances of licorice and balsamic hints.

Food Pairing:

The 2020 Tramonti Rosso is a versatile companion for roasted meats, aged cheeses, or traditional Campanian dishes such as eggplant parmigiana or braised rabbit.

Conclusion:

This wine embodies the soul of Tramonti, showcasing the balance of tradition and nature. A superb representation of the Amalfi Coast’s viticultural heritage, with potential to age gracefully over the next 5–8 years. PM 89
